New Date - Public Hearing - Location for WJWW Filtration Plant

Sat, Feb 10, 2024 • Westchester Joint Water Works

 - County Legislators Host Public Hearing: Determining Location for WJWW Filtration Plant - Thursday - Feb. 15, 7 p.m. -
Westchester Joint Water Works (WJWW) is moving forward with plans to build a filtration plant, intending to remove over 6 acres of forest on land they do not currently own. This land, located at the Westchester County Airport, is currently a green, forested space and is subject to a potential "land swap" or sale that would require approval from the Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) in the future. They are holding this meeting for input from constituents that will influence how they vote.

How You Can Help:  Attend the Westchester County Board of Legislators Public Listening Session on Thu, February 15th at 7 p.m.

What: Public Listening Session concerning the proposed location of a critical water treatment facility. WJWW is seeking county approval for a land exchange transaction.

Where: This session offers both virtual and in-person attendance options

-Virtual: Preregister now to  speak remotely using this link provided by the County: register here . Upon successful registration you will receive a WebEx confirmation and login credentials.

-In person: Meet at the Chambers of the WCBOL, located on the 8th Floor of the Michaelian Office Building, 148 Martine Avenue, White Plains.

Why: Constructing the filtration plant is crucial for meeting safe drinking water standards mandated by state and federal laws. However, the decision on its precise location needs to be determined.

Advocates including PEPA, Purchase Friends, Airport Coalition, Sierra Club, and others, support building the facility on WJWW's existing property, outside the Kensico Reservoir watershed, rather than on airport property that is currently undeveloped, forested green space. Therefore, we urge the BOL to oppose the land swap proposal. Please read the FAQ’s on PEPA’s website which provide more information about this issue.

The County Legislators' invitation emphasizes that hearing from their constituents is an essential component of a thorough review. This demonstrates the importance of input from constituents and expresses openness to their perspectives. We hope you will take that to heart and accept their invitation to attend, letting your voice be heard.

Your participation in this session is crucial. Join in to voice your opinions and help shape this important decision.
